TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) - Authorities in Honduras say clashes between police and protesters opposing price increases have left seven security agents injured and resulted in several arrests.

Thousands of leftist activists, students and farmers are blocking highways and rallying in the capital of Tegucigalpa to protest rising prices and demand wage hikes from the government.

Police fired tear gas at the stick-wielding protesters. Security Minister Jorge Rodas said six police officers and a soldier have been hurt in Thursday's protests.

Eight people have been arrested, including a local lawmaker who was shown in TV footage being struck by police with their riot shields.

Protest organizers accuse authorities of overreacting and announced more demonstrations for on May 1.
