Algerian football fans rioted after a power cut stopped television coverage of Germany's World Cup quarter-final victory over Argentina.
Fans in the western Algerian town of Tiaret ransacked and set fire to public buildings when the electrical failure struck after the start of the match.
Groups of youths attacked the Ksar Chellala town hall, 120 kilometres south-east of Tiaret, and gangs also blocked access to Tiaret with burning tyres.
Riot police used tear-gas grenades to disperse the crowds.
The Algerian government had decided to subsidise the cost of showing the World Cup after television companies indicated they would not transmit the matches.
