Two killed in clashes over rickshaw fare in Bangladesh

By Nazrul Islam, Dhaka: At least two people were killed and over 50 injured in a fierce triangular clash involving villagers and the police in north-eastern Bangladeshi district of Habiganj on Wednesday, according to police.

Locals said one of the two deceased Syed Mia, 30, was killed by his rivals while police firing killed another villager, Lal Mian, 45. Police, however, said they opened gunshot only to disperse the battling villagers.

The clashes originated following a hot exchange of words between a rickshaw-puller and his passenger over the fare to be given, said the police in Habiganj district.

Their scuffle attracted villagers from Umendaranagar and Patharia in the morning. Both groups were equipped with lethal weapons and attacked their opponents, leaving a number of villagers injured.

The riot police was called in immediately. At least 100 gunshots were fired and 30 teargas shells lobbed to disperse the desperate villagers.

Additional police reinforcements have been deployed to maintain law and orderin the area.
