ADDIS ABABA (AFP) - Gunmen killed at least eight people over the weekend in a town in southwest Ethiopia, sparking a riot that was put down by government troops, residents said on Monday. The residents said that others may have died during the riot in the town of Gambella, located some 450 kilometers (280 miles) southwest of the capital, Addis Ababa.
"The attack triggered a riot by the local inhabitants, which forced government to intervene to stop the riot," said one resident contacted by AFP. "The town is now deserted and the army and the police are patrolling the streets," the residents said, pointing out that although no official curfew had been declared, "people are keeping indoors for fear of further attacks." Gambella, home to two major ethnic groups, the Agnwak and Nuer, has been tense as the rival groups vie for social and political supremacy.
