CHENNAI, SEPT. 16. Violence erupted at Tiruninravur railway station near Avadi this morning when a scrap between two groups of commuters escalated, with local residents joining in the fray. The result: electric trains and shops damaged and a motorcycle, belonging to a Railway Protection Force officer, set ablaze. The trouble arose when a Central-bound train from Tiruttani (TAM 6) reached Tiruninravur at 8.54 a.m., about 30 minutes behind schedule. Some commuters squatted on the tracks in protest, saying this had become an everyday affair. Another grievance was that fast services between Tiruttani and Chennai were halting at all stations, instead of only the designated stops. Pleas from other passengers to the protestors to disperse worsened the situation, as it led to a verbal duel and physical clash between two sections. Some miscreants began throwing stones, damaging the electric trains. The stones also fell on shops near the railway station, forcing shopkeepers to down their shutters. The locals then entered the station armed with wooden clubs, according to police and eyewitnesses. They proceeded to vent their anger on the stationmaster's office, damaging equipment, according to a railway official present on the spot. They also burnt a trolley and a motorcycle belonging to a sub-inspector of the Railway Protection Force. Meanwhile, the Deputy Superintendent of the Avadi sub-division of Chengai (East) police rushed to the spot with a team of policemen. Outnumbered, the police were unable to bring the situation under control immediately. It was only after the arrival of reinforcements from Chengai (East) police and RPF did the situation come under control. The RPF, which is investigating the violence, has registered a case and taken 11 persons for questioning. The detainees belong to Mosur, Tiruninravur and nearby areas. Normality was restored only around 1 p.m. Railway officials said the slow running of trains was because of the work on the laying of a fourth line between Pattabhiram and Tiruvallur, which was going on in full swing. The line is due to be inaugurated by the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, on Saturday.
