One dies in Bhopal violence, Samajwadi Party leader held :

Bhopal, Oct 26 : One person was killed and three were injured when police opened fire to control sectarian violence in this Madhya Pradesh capital Tuesday.

Police later arrested Samajwadi Party leader Arif Masood for inciting violence and took him to an undisclosed location.

The Samajwadi Party has called for the release of Masood, who had unsuccessfully contested polls to the assembly from the city last December, and has threatened a stir if he was not set free.

The district administration has announced a compensation of Rs.100,000 to the family of the deceased. Two policemen were suspended for negligence.

"The cause of the whole incident is very petty. A two-wheeler rider hit a youth playing cricket in Shahjahanabad. An argument snowballed into a clash," said Inspector General of Police Surendra Singh.

"Police opened fire to control the situation. One youth was killed and three others were injured in the firing," he said.

"The situation now is under control," Singh said.

According to police, some people tried to snatch away the automatic rifle of a police constable. "The constable had to open fire, which resulted in the death and injuries," an official said.

The police had a tough time controlling the situation.

Senior civil and police officials rushed to Shahjahanabad with heavy reinforcements to control the situation. But as tension continued to simmer, anti-riot vehicles where pressed into service and more police contingents rushed to the troubled area.

The youths injured in police firing were admitted to state-run Hamidia Hospital. Some people in groups reached the hospital and started raising slogans against the district administration and police.

Shops in the vicinity of the hospital closed down. It was only after police reinforcements reached the hospital that the situation was normalised.
