police yesterday fired tear gas to break up rioting supporters after Malawi let slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Tunisia in their World Cup qualifier.

Angry fans hurled stones and other missiles in frustration after veteran Tunisian midfielder Kaies Ghodhbane scored a stoppage-time equaliser to clinch a valuable away point.

The Turkish-based midfielder scored after Ziad Jaziri had pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 82nd minute.

The draw was a major let-off for the African champions, whose chance of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany would have been badly hit had they suffered a surprise defeat.

Malawi led 2-0 at halftime after a 20th minute header from tall striker Russell Mwafulirwa and a left-footed shot from Emmanuel Chipatalala in the 37th had put them on top.

It was a bright start for Malawi's new coach Yasine Osman, back in charge after the departure of John Kaputa last month.

But the home side were reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute when Allan Kamanga gave away a penalty and was sent off for a second bookable offence after his foul in the area.

Malawi were spared further punishment, however, as Tunisia's Brazilian-born striker Francileudo dos Santos hit the bar with his spot kick.
