YOLA — NO fewer than four persons have been confirmed killed while more were injured in Ganye, Adamawa State, in a violent clash between civilians and police in the area yesterday.
This is the second civilians/police violent clash in the state within one month.
Only late last month, youths clashed with the police in Michika resulting in the death of many youths.
Reports from Ganye indicated that the violent skirmish broke out following a fight between two civilians.
Eyewitness account stated that the two civilians rushed to the police station to lodge their complaints at the Divisional police station in Ganye.
It added that confusion ensued thereafter and one of the complainants was beaten to a state of coma and eventually died while receiving medical attention in a hospital in the town.
On hearing of the death of one the complainants, armed youths stormed the police station and fierce battle with the police ensued.
The Ganye division police station was completely razed down, while scores of persons were injured apart from the four deaths recorded.
Several public and personal property were destroyed and burnt in the confusion.
Confirming to newsmen in his office, Adamawa State Commissioner of police, Mr. Mohammed Sambo, said a detachment of anti-riot police has been dispatched to the troubled area to quell the situation.
Compol Sambo disclosed that any policeman found to had taken part in the death of the civilians will be tried and if found guilty, will be dismissed and prosecuted.
