LAGOS - A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed in Pankshin, a town in Nigeria’s central Plateau State, after a clash between police and youths in which at least two people were killed, official Radio Nigeria reported on Wednesday.

The measure was aimed at safeguarding lives and property and to stop the spread of the unrest, the radio said, quoting an official statement.

Trouble started when policemen stormed a hotel in an attempt to arrest fleeing suspected armed robbers. In the ensuing confusion, a resident was found dead and the youths blamed his death on policemen, The Guardian newspaper reported.

Irate youths concluded that police had shot an innocent person and stormed a nearby police station. They set it on fire and released all the detainees there, including 25 youths arrested earlier, the daily said.

In the melee, another man was found shot dead, the report said.

Authorities on Tuesday last week approved the deployment of troops and riot policemen to maintain peace in Jos, the state capital, days after the police shot dead one person.

On October 13, police gunned down one man and seriously injured another when they opened fire on a crow
