Calm in Gilgit as curfew relaxed

By Shabbir Ahmed Mir

GILGIT: On the 6th day of the imposition of curfew in Gilgit, two hours sector-wise relaxation was given to the people and no unpleasant incident was reported during the curfew break, official sources said.

No leniency in curfew was observed in the areas of Khomer, Jutial, Barmas and Nagral for fear of possible subversive activities until Tuesday when two hours relaxation in curfew was allowed there. Eastern parts of the city also had curfew relaxation Tuesday.

A press release issued by the district magistrate said, "stranded passengers and tourists are being evacuated under police protection".

It could however not be ascertained where these tourists and passengers were taken under police custody. Official sources added the administration was taking all possible measures to ensure safety of public and their properties.

Meanwhile, sources said that security forces recovered 42 pieces of arms, which were earlier snatched from the paramilitary forces by the agitating mob in Rahimababd, Hunza. Attempts were also underway to get back the weapons stolen from police recruitment centre, which was also burnt during the sectarian riots before curfew was clamped down.

Sources said earlier the authorities detained eight persons who reportedly violated travel ban restrictions during the curfew break.
