MONTEVIDEO, Nov. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- A police station was set on fire in east
Montevideo in a riot triggered by the death of two youngsters shot by a
policeman, the Montevideo Police director said Tuesday.
The policeman, who has been under arrest and awaiting for a decision by
judge, opened fire in an attempt to disperse a group of youngsters who were
having fun on the street Monday night, Nelson Rodriguez said to the local radio
station El Espectador.
Two youngsters were shot dead, and another five were injured and remain
hospitalized. Witnesses said several of the youngsters had tried to take away
the handgun of the policeman who opened fire.
The police chief admitted that the policeman had overreacted and the
incident led to the violence in the Euskal Erria 70 zone, where people set fire
on a police station and threw stones at ambulances and firemen sent to the spot.
